Joint Faculty Position in Theoretical Astrophysics, Particle Physics, or Cosmology

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at York University in Toronto and the nearby Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics invite applications for a joint appointment in the general area of Theoretical Astrophysics, Particle Physics, or Cosmology, to begin July 1, 2012. This is a tenure-track faculty position at York, in combination with an associate faculty position at the Perimeter Institute. Rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience; exceptional senior applicants may be considered. The appointee will be expected to spend significant amounts of time at both locations, and will have a correspondingly reduced teaching load.

We seek both established scientists who are leaders internationally in their fields and young scientists who show exceptional promise of becoming leaders. We especially seek individuals who are interested in communicating with both astronomers and particle physicists and promoting interactions between the two communities. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong, externally-funded research program and to contribute to physics and astronomy education and excellence in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate must have a PhD along with suitable postdoctoral experience, and must be eligible for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies at York University.

The Perimeter Institute is a non-profit research institute devoted to foundational theoretical physics research, and is in the midst of a substantial expansion of its faculty. It currently has strong research efforts across a wide range of interrelated areas, including Cosmology, String Theory, Quantum Gravity, Quantum Foundations, Quantum Information, Particle Physics, Condensed Matter Physics and Mathematical Physics. Further information can be found at www.perimeterinstitute.ca. .

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at York University has strong research groups in both astronomy and high-energy physics. Astronomical research foci include active galactic nuclei, the evolution of galaxies and their constituents, cosmic structure, and galaxy formation. Research foci in high-energy physics include lattice gauge theory, QCD, neutrinos, heavy quarks, and physics beyond the Standard Model. Astronomers regularly undertake optical and infrared observations with facilities such as the Gemini Observatories and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and radio observations via VLBI. Particle physicists are involved in high-energy experiments at CERN, Fermilab, and J-PARC. Further information can be found at www.physics.yorku.ca.

To guarantee full consideration, please apply online by January 15, 2012. Please submit a curriculum vitae, a summary of seminal research contributions, and an outline of research plans. Also, please identify three individuals who are willing to supply letters of recommendation. Applications should be submitted to http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/Joint_Perimeter_York_Faculty.

York University is an Affirmative Action Employer. The Affirmative Action Program can be found on York’s web site at www.yorku.ca/acadjobs, or a copy can be obtained by calling the affirmative action office at 416.736.5713. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
